How to Properly Identify Immigrants
The terms typically used to identify undocumented immigrants or persons who are not legal citizens of the United States of America can be somewhat offensive and quite disturbing. Even more so, it may be quite unpleasant or troubling to persons who may feel some type of love for this country and have hopes of becoming a citizen one day. However, with the label attached to them, they may feel discriminated against and judged. The Library of Congress, after two years of being petitioned by a college student group, has finally been encouraged and has now converted to using less offensive terms and labels when referring to undocumented immigrants. Previously called “illegal” and “aliens”, these students led a campaign that pushed the Library of Congress to refer to undocumented immigrants as "unauthorized" and "non-citizen".
