Latino's Singled Out in Immigration Discussions:
Immigration Discussions overlook Asian Undocumented Immigrants
A conservative by the name Ann Coulter brought about a conversation with her comment about undocumented immigrants. Saying “we put a few of them on buses.”
This is an overwhelming misunderstanding when it comes to undocumented immigrants in America, that they are a bus ride away. She was specifically talking about journalist and activist Jose Antonio Vargas who has a show on MTV. He arrived into the US at age 12 and has remained here, he is now 34. What sparked this conversation is the fact the he is from the Philippines. Meaning it is impossible for him to “catch a bus” back to where he is from.
In recent debates there has been discussion about boarders and calls being build or improved. But that will only effect the Latino population. Immigrants such as Asians and Africans have been often left out of the equation, or overlooked. Keep in mind immigrants make up the fast growing undocumented population, and are even expected to surpass Latinos. Moreover, when they are brought up in this debate they are seen as the “model immigrants”. This demonizes Latino immigrants further and helps deflect from the problems Asian immigrants have. Overall, it is important to start tweaking the way in which undocumented immigrants are discussed, and stop focusing on one particular group.
