Immigration Arrests

Immigration arrests up 38% nationwide under Trump

The amount of undocumented immigrants who are being arrested has increased by nearly 40% since the enhancement of immigration enforcement by Donald Trump. Although it was said that undocumented immigrants with prior criminal records would be the main targets most of the immigrants arrested had no criminal record at all. During former President Barack Obama’s final year 4,242 undocumented immigrants were arrested. Since January 22 of this year more than 10,845 immigrants with no criminal record have been arrested. This is a 156% increase since 2016. Some individuals are calling it an order of mass deportation. Any illegal immigrant who comes in contact with an ICE agent can be arrested even if they were not the priority. Before the Trump administration only undocumented immigrants who were gang affiliated, convicted felons or had numerous misdemeanors were considered priorities and would be arrested. It was said that these immigrants would still receive a rightful due process and fighting chance.
It is unbelievable how much families and loved ones are being pulled apart because of this new immigration order. The arrests should be focused on the undocumented individuals who actually pose a threat to the community such as those with criminal records and convictions. Deporting thousands of individuals who have no prior record with the law and who works hard to make a living for themselves and their families does not help the country progress in any way. Instead of focusing on the real criminals who actually deserve to be taken off of the streets the government is wasting time disrupting homes and removing honest hard working individuals from the country because they do not have the right documents. A crime is a crime but we must notice the difference between severe crimes such as rape, theft, assault and robbery and crimes such as illegal entry for a chance of survival.
