“Key points in Trump's immigration executive orders”
Date: January 26, 2017
Summary: One of the major details is the wall, in which Donald Trump states that it must be explicitly a physical wall or barrier. In regards to deportation, Department of Homeland Security has been instructed to hire 5,000 more agents and 10,000 immigration officers. These officers should be trained in order to interrogate, detain, arrest, and look for non-citizens. Funding has yet to be discussed for this. In detention centers, the order asks for the secretary of homeland security to establish detention facilities near the border and staff them with officers and immigration judges. In regards to detained immigrants, the executive order has ordered homeland security to ensure that unaccompanied children receive care and are sent back to their homes and that the abuse of parole and asylum provisions is prevented. The order also states that the priority will be deporting immigrants who have been convicted of any criminal offense, charged with a criminal offense, have engaged in fraud or willful misrepresentation before a government agency, have abused any program for public benefits, among others- including if an immigration officers feels they are a danger to national security. There are also plans to create an office for victims of crimes committed by removable aliens, to study the effects of victimization by criminal aliens.
Immigration Executive Orders
The proposal to hire more immigration agents and officers is, I think one of the best if not the best propositions made by Trump. Ultimately, protecting our nation should be at the forefront of our agenda, however, that is not to say that we can’t allow in non-citizens to help our country thrive. In my opinion, the idea of more hires should be to better evaluate these illegal immigrants, rather than to shun them away. While the order provides for several detailed instructions, I think that is important to weigh the severity of the offenses committed and to inform the immigrants as to what is at stake when they enter our US borders.
