Pope Francis to Talk Immigration
On February 12-18 Pope Francis will be visiting the US - Mexican border to talk about Immigration. This has been a hot topic throughout this current presidential campaign, especially concerning Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. Immigration has also been a topic close to the Pope’s heart because it effects so many people. His presence at the border will attract many people especially since it involved such an important political topic. Overall migration is a difficult situation and the Pope is not going to ignore the demands of the national sovereignty. But, he is hoping for a more open and generous approach on the topic. Specifically, it is said that he will be urging the United States Government to at least find ways to address the reasons why people are leaving Latin American Countries.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been rounding up Central American Immigrants who entered without permission from 2014. On another note the Secretary of state has been talking about expanding the program to allow Central Americans to apply for refugee status before traveling north. But because of the dangers throughout the Central American region, its citizens believe there is no time to wait, lives are being taken. This is ultimately why the Pope feels strongly about addressing this subject.
It's hard for the US. One the one hand, we have a whole continent under us with millions of citizens banging on our doors to come in every year. On the other hand, if your neighbor's house was on fire, wouldn't you open the door ?
I think the answer is that we need to:
1. Make the one's already in the US LEGAL with heavy penalties
2. With those funds, the US makes a real effort to distinguish WHICH of the immigrants at the borders truly need our protections
This is what Obama wanted to do, but the republicans are having a heart attack.
